Taken marks the launch of Sinkhole’s new exhibition space, a platform dedicated to critically examining the shifting definitions of photography.
This inaugural exhibition traces photography’s inherent slowness: the slow act of seeing, making, and absorbing. This durational quality is likened to water eroding stone—a process that slowly breaks down the subconscious and transforms perception over time. The metaphor of “dripping”—a gentle, continuous undoing—frames the exhibition as an act of working through, of allowing meaning to emerge through persistence.
Taken focuses on the collaborative practice of artists Giorgia Alliata and Ridwana Rahman. During their MFA studies, the artists discovered a mutual sensitivity to image-making and initiated a shared Instagram account, @tomatotomatoistaken, where they posted images they imagined the other might take—images they themselves desired to capture.
This project, and the exhibition it inspired, explores the idea of image ownership, shared authorship, and the fluidity of visual intention. As the artists explain:
“We found ourselves taking pictures of the same things and wanted to have a platform where these could belong to both of us. Sometimes we had taken the exact same image in different ways. Other times, the archive influenced what we photographed next. We often talked about it until the possibilities of the image felt exhausted.”
In this exhibition, viewers encounter these overlapping visual conversations—a window enclosed by walls, an image, a fragment, seen again through a new lens. These are moments that, for Ridwana and Giorgia, define what photography can be: incomplete, co-owned, and constantly reinterpreted.
